MERCEDES-BENZ – Cable Shredder

Mercedes-Benz disassembles several thousand vehicles every year. These vehicles each contain between 25-30 kg of wiring harnesses that would be ideal to process for recycling purposes. The main issue however is that these wiring harnesses are attached to one another with sticky electrical tape which hinders the quick separation.

By working together with Guidetti, a system was developed whereby the glue in the electrical tape was neutralized which enabled easier separation of wire insulation from copper wire.

BMW – Vehicle Press

BMW is world renowned for their innovations when it comes to the design of their vehicles which carries over into the recycling of their own vehicles. As a result by the end of 2013 the BMW Recycling Center together with Antonelli developed a vehicle press that was specifically designed to crush the latest generations of BMW’s including the new 7-Series and making it as compact as possible.

The challenges encountered during this project began with the fact that there are large differences in density throughout a vehicle such as those found between the passenger compartment and the subframe for suspension mounting. This means that the press encounters dramatically different amounts of pressure along the press plate. To counter this the vehicle press was equipped with 6 hydraulic cylinders that each have a capacity of 133 metric tonnes which works out to a combined total of 800 metric tonnes of pressure. In other words, this press is strong enough to crush six diesel locomotives. Due to this design the pressure along welding points is better distributed leading to a longer life for the equipment.

BMW – Customized Tire Removal Station

The auto manufacturer BMW processes between 4,000 and 5,000 every year which means that there are also a lot of wheel/tire combinations that need to be addressed. In this case IRIS-MEC stepped in and provided BMW with a customized version their SR11 Wheel Press that can accommodate larger wheel sizes all the way up to 800mm.

In addition to this, it was noted that the wheels were not only heavy, but also consisted entirely of aluminum. For efficiency, safety and ergonomic reasons the customized system for BMW consisted of a small lift and transferred directly into the enclosed wheel press which ensured that there was no shrapnel to injure any workers. The processed wheels then drop out the bottom onto a conveyor belt where the rubber is then separated from the aluminum on a separator.

Engine Crusher T-Break at BMW´s Recycling and Dismantling Center

In February 2016 Meridionale Impianti and Recycling Partners installed the new Engine Crusher T-Break at BMW. With this machine you can press and destroy engines and other aggregates to become able to separate different materials. Engines, gear boxes and other things (generators, starters, wheels, ….) will be destroyed by a hydraulic cylinder. Not flexible materials as aluminum are breaking and can be separated. So this material will no longer go in cheaper mixed scrap. Additionally TBreak makes sure, that all operated aggregates are really destroyed. Everybody can see that there is nothing usable at the end.
